A community Christmas comes to Riverstone

All eyes , including Santa ’ s , were dazzled by the spectacular lighting up of the Riverstone Christmas tree at the Riverstone Christmas Concert .
The inaugural event , featured on our cover this month , was well received by families who enjoyed a night of free entertainment , plenty of food and photos with Santa .
Riverstone ’ s event has joined the established series of free community celebrations held by Blacktown City Council in Mt Druitt and Blacktown town centre .
And , best of all , it ’ s expected to be an annual fixture on the community events calendar from now on , according to Council , which selected the locale for this event .
“ Riverstone is a major town centre … the area is experiencing huge growth , which is expected to continue into the future ,” the spokesperson said .
“ Our inaugural Riverstone Christmas Concert reflects the growth of this town centre and the importance of providing entertainment for the many families that call Riverstone home .”

Christmas carols and family favourites on stage at the Sam Lane Community Complex throughout the night .
But then the main attraction , the giant Christmas Tree , took centre stage when Sue Lawrence , president of the Riverstone Chamber of Commerce , hit the switch to light up the hundreds of fairy lights surrounded by colourful decorations .
Spreading Christmas cheer and happiness throughout the community is all part of these celebrations , which also saw the launch of the Mayoress ’ Christmas gift appeal .
For more than 30 years this annual appeal has helped families of Blacktown City share in the joy of Christmas by donating gifts to those less fortunate or doing it tough .
“ Gifts are sought for children aged 0 to 16 years ,” the Council spokesperson said .
“ Gift suggestions include new and unused toys , books , clothing and non-perishable goods . We kindly ask that you leave gifts unwrapped or in a gift bag for ease of sorting and distribution .” The appeal runs until Friday , 10 December . For more details , see our story on page 12 .
