China

With well over one billion residents and mega cities with the economic output of countries, the Far East is open for business. Like other Asian countries, an easy way in is as an English teacher with proper certification. Otherwise, working for a multi-national firm with a presence in China and/or having a strong grasp of Mandarin helps. Another piece of advice: teaching one year as an ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher can help prove to other Chinese employers that you can handle the culture shock and language.

Australia

The land down under is now

home to the sixth largest

population of US citizens outside of America. It's the country that I currently call home and is a great option especially if you have a needed skill that's recognized

by the government.

Australia could also pose the

least amount of culture

shock for an American expat as it is an English speaking

Commonwealth of

the UK.

Other perks include

access to two of the

safest airlines

globally: Qantas and Air

New Zealand. Australia also

has universal healthcare in

the form of Medicare, a

much higher minimum wage of nearly $18, and competitive salary

and wage packages for many industries.

Colombia

This former war-torn South American country is increasing in popularity for African-Americans.

Much of the drug trade from the infamous cartels is gone thanks to strong government action. One of the cities at the center of this former trade, and once considered the murder capital of the world: Medellin, is now a cultural hot-spot.

Another issue was the decades of civil war involving the FARC: the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. That group has since renounced violence, submitted much of their weaponry, and is now a recognized political party.
