The Ateres Yaakov Star
Newspapers nowadays are a
dying breed. Journalists are fired,
daily papers become weekly papers,
print publications shift to web publications, and slowly, the bookless,
mindless world Ray Bradbury envisioned in “Fahrenheit 451” and other
works takes shape. Teens of today are
being raised in an era where we expect our information to be instantaneously available at our fingertips and
on demand. Quality is eschewed for
alacrity. Thoughts are parsed down
into 140 characters, videos shortened
into GIFs, and images sent via Snapchat so their shelf life is all of 3 seconds.
With the Ateres Yaakov Star,
our prerogative was to match quality
with quantity. Our mission was to
create a regular monthly paper that
was relevant and edifying, while not
sacrificing on the quality and literary
merit of the journalism and editorials
herein. In that regard, the students
have exceeded expectations on every
level.
We meet monthly to assign
articles, discuss topics, and do our
very best to deliver our readers with
the best news, thoughts, and talents
that MAY and its students have to
offer. The writers are producing superb work and the editors have done
an excellent job ensuring that the
quality is maintained.
A special thanks to Shmuel
Aidelson, Naftali Goldschein and the
rest of the ad team for spending hours of
their free time procuring ads ensuring
that we can continue to produce a newsletter of the highest print quality and
have enough issues for the students,
parents and Kehilla at Ateres Yaakov.
Most impressively, our graphic
designer, Binyamin Korn works overtime
on the layout and editing of each issue.
Any neat graphics herein are his work
entirely. As for the cartoons, sports trivia
and fun zone, kudos to all of the regular
contributors of those features.
Lastly, our editors-in-chief, Dani
Feit and Baruch Eisenberger, are both
supremely talented and motivated. The
continued success and timeliness of this
paper is a testament to their work behind the scenes.
While I am the faculty advisor of
the paper, I barely even have to advise
the boys! This paper provides an opportunity for the students to express themselves and it has demonstrated the impressive capabilities and dedication of
each staff member. Each and every one
of them has gone above and beyond to
make this paper a worthwhile reminder
that every now and then, it is nice to sit
back and read an actual paper, rather
than gradually lose one’s eyesight peering down at a dimly lit screen.
I sincerely hope that this paper is as enjoyable for you to read as it was for us to
produce!
