The Ateres Yaakov Star December 2014 3 MAY Sweeps First Torah Bowl Meet The Torah Bowl season kicked off this month with its first meet, hosted by DRS. MAY swept the event 4 games to 0. The MAY team beat all three of the other schools in the Southern Division: DRS, Rambam, and Sha’arei Torah-at least once. MAY faced off against Rambam first and won 22-10. Back to back matches with Sha’arei Torah featured similar results as MAY won 26-10 and 25-6. DRS, who had home-court advantage, put up the greatest fight but the MAY team pulled out a 19-11 win. The longest-tenured team members, seniors Yosef Samson and David Levene, led the way for the team as they swept all competition while outscoring them by a combined 92-37 By: Shmuel Aidelson-11th Grade Shmuel Berger- 11th Grade score. This was the second consecutive year that MAY started the season 4-0, reinforcing their status as the favorites in their division. Yosef Samson, the highest scoring member of the team, explained that, “This was a good opportunity for us to test ourselves and see where we were holding. I think we played great as a team and this meet will help us prepare for the harder events ahead.” Rabbi Tsvi Greenfield, the new Student Activities Coordinator at MAY, coached the team. He stated that, “It was truly amazing to see all the boys get together and compete on their mastery of the first 3 parshiyos in Bereishis.” MAY Football Off to a Running Start By: Aryeh Horowitz-12th Grade The football season is underway in Mesivta Ateres Yaakov and the school is alive with team spirit. The MAY Eagles have dominated the competition, starting 4-0 with four 20-point victories in the Yeshiva Football League. The MAY Eagles kicked off the season by soundly beating Yam HaTorah 27-0. They then defeated Yam HaTorah again in the second game and Yeshiva Darchei Eretz (YDE) in their 3rd game of the season. Senior quarterback, Ari Shaulson, is confident about the team, saying, “Losing in the championships like last season is not an option this year. Our team has, and continues to, put in so much effort into each game and practice as the season goes on.” He enthusiastically added, “I’m confident that the trophy will be ours at the end of the season! Starting offensive lineman Avi Schwartzblatt also chimed in, saying, “I love being on the football team. The closeness you feel with all your teammates is awesome.
