Accelerating efforts
to enable people with
autism and other
neurodevelopmental
disorders to lead a
productive life, countries
in WHO South-East Asia
Region have adopted the
‘Thimphu Declaration’
which calls for integrating
the needs of such
individuals and their
families into national
health and socioeconomic
development plans.
The Declaration, adopted
at the end of the three-
day International
Conference on Autism
and Neurodevelopmental
Disorders, emphasizes
the need for a whole-
of–society and whole-of-
government approach to
these issues, with specific
attention to strengthening
national capacities in
the health, education
and social care sectors to
provide effective services
and support to people
with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD) and other
neurodevelopmental
disorders (NDDs).

partnerships are
fundamental to
addressing autism in
the Region. M ember
countries are already
demonstrating how
progress can be forged,
by fun-filled activities
for the autistic kids and
their parents including a
medical clowning session
by Mr Harish Bhuvan,
organized to entertain the
children. Also, the evening
witnessed an interactive
storytelling session by
professional story teller,
Mr Vikram Sridhar.

2 Diabetes Mellitus, Heart
Disease and Cancer have
occupied the centre stage.
This has, at the same
time, also resulted in
huge social and economic
burden on society which
has more than 65 percent
of population below the
age of 45 and, therefore,
cannot afford any
drainage or wastage of
valuable youth potential.
