Another opportunity lies in off-patent technologies — genes and technologies that have completed their patent lifecycle in other countries and are now available without the high costs associated with proprietary products . Dr Singh pointed out that such technologies could be a game-changer for India ’ s agricultural sector ,
particularly in crops like maize and cotton . " There are many valuable genes that are no longer patented but could be used to great effect in India ."
Encouraging their adoption by both public and private breeders could fasttrack innovation without the financial burden of developing new technologies . This strategy would help India reduce costs while staying on par with global advancements , making agricultural innovation more accessible .
