India bears a significant portion of Tuberculosis ( TB ) burden , accounting for over a quarter of the global TB cases with an estimated 2.7 million incidents and more than 400,000 deaths each year . In light of this pressing health challenge , Dr D . Y . Patil Medical College , Hospital and Research Centre , Pimpri , Pune , in collaboration with Boston University , is launching a groundbreaking research study titled “ Phenotype , Progression , and Immune Correlates of Post-Tuberculosis Lung Disease ( Post TB Lung Disease ).” Funded by the National Institutes of Health , Bethesda , USA , this comprehensive study aims to explore the long-term impact of TB and pave the way for improved care for TB survivors in India .

In an exclusive conversation , Dr M . S . Barthwal , Professor & HOD of Respiratory Medicine , Dr D . Y . Patil Medical College , Hospital and Research Centre explained the significance of the collaboration .

study and other lesser-known details ?
The collaboration between Dr . D . Y . Patil Medical College , Hospital , and Research Centre and Boston University focuses on the long-term effects experienced by tuberculosis ( TB ) patients who have completed their treatment . While these individuals are no longer infectious , the disease often leaves behind lung damage , such as fibrosis , which persists after the bacteria have been eliminated . This study aims to assess the extent of the lung damage and understand the factors contributing to it . In the first phase , the research will evaluate these effects over a year , measuring various markers in blood samples to determine if these factors can be modified through drug interventions to improve patient outcomes . The study aims to evaluate the extent of this damage and identify the underlying factors contributing to it .
What is the potential impact of this study on the prevention , cure , and recovery of post-TB conditions ? How could it benefit TB survivors in India ?
