The process typically includes three main steps : pre-processing , bioprinting , and post-processing . Bioinks serve as the " ink " in 3D bioprinting and consist of living cells , such as stem cells or patient-specific cells , combined with biomaterials that provide structural support and mimic the extracellular matrix ( ECM ). Biomaterials can include hydrogels , biodegradable polymers , and other biocompatible materials .
