Sucking
Sucking is an automatic reflex, which can be present even before birth. It often begins with infants sucking their thumbs (which has been shown to occur sometimes within the womb) and is a way for the baby to soothe itself. The sucking reflex provides both nourishment and comfort after birth.
Responses to stimuli
Babies display many different reflexes for the many stimuli that come their way. When faced with bright light they automatically close their eyes and will suckle if you lightly stroke the corner of their mouth. Babies will usually awake when touched, be startled by sudden movement or noise and respond to the sound of their mothers voice from their first day.
