ENTRY / EXIT OF BIKES IN MEXICO
There is no immigration and custom from USA side
when you cross from San Diego to Mexico.
At the US-Mexico border get the tourist permission for
$27. Keep the receipt and immigration paper safe, as
you will need those to exit Mexico.
No bike permits and custom needed at the US-Mexico
border. However, you will need that before entering
mainland Mexico.
The Baja ferry from La Paz to Matzalan in mainland Mexico
costs 2420 (pesos) per bike and rider and runs only on
Saturdays and Tuesdays.
Make sure you go to the port in the morning to get your bike
permit. On saturday they work till 3pm & Sundays till 6pm.
You can pay the $400 deposit in cash or by credit card. This
deposit will be returned to you once you leave Mexico. $59 is
the custom charge payable. You need your bike registration,
passport and license. Insurance cost $120 each and you can
get it online, no one checked it but it's safer to have it.
You will not be allowed to board the ferry without your bike
permit, as you are travelling from a free zone area to
mainland Mexico.
Your Baja ferry ticket fare is not refundable, so make sure
you reach the ferry station on time.
To exit Mexico, you have to stamp your passport.
You have to cancel your bike permit to take your deposit
back. This happens at the border Banjercito. They will give
you a receipt and will take the permit back.
Keep the receipt safe for entering Guatemala. We crossed
into Guatemala through Talisman.
Stay away from agents with red T-shirts near to the Mexico-
Guatemala border. You don't need their services.
