JISC Roadshow - 25th June 2013

Remember the term IT? It seems that we have moved on - the expression now commonly used within education is Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) which describes the use and adoption of technology to support and enhance learning. Although the acronyms may have changed and the technology certainly has Bradford College has had continuing support from various external organisations and agencies within this changing landscape.

Partners such as JISC Yorkshire and Humber have supported us on this journey with technical advice, training and project funding.

In June 2013, JISC adventurers Ali-Marie Ladwa, Theresa Beattie and Edward Gulc brought their Roadshow to the College for a day. Fourteen academic staff from various departments were given the opportunity to explore and experiment with various technologies to support learning, teaching and assessment.

The focus of the training was on teaching and learning not on the technology itself although there were plenty of gadgets and gizmos.

Staff were encouraged to think about expanding their horizons and to reflect, discuss and explore how some tools and practices could support the learner (whilst helping the tutor at the same time). This showcasing of good practice and sharing of knowledge and experience was appreciated by all and emphasised that context is key when adopting such tools. What may be useful in one subject area may not be that relevant in another yet the opportunity to share such thoughts and ideas with different teams was very informative.

A priority for all participants was how such technologies could impact on the student experience. Teaching staff are hoping to share their ideas with colleagues to develop teaching practice. We hope the JISC Roadshow will return and provide more inspiration and motivation to staff.
