Reading Science and
Read the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s most recent
“Water Quality Report,” available online. This annual report describing
where your water comes from and what it contains is required by
federal law. Choose a table or section of a table from the report, and
write in paragraph form the main conclusions one can draw from it.
Technical Subjects
RST.9-10.7. Translate quantitative or technical information
expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart)
and translate information expressed visually or mathematically
(e.g., in an equation) into words. RST.11-12.7. Integrate and evaluate
multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and
media (e.g., quantitative data, video, multimedia) in order to address
a question or solve a problem.
As a class, develop a list of jobs—such as watershed keeper, water
quality analyst, communications officer, water distribution operator,
civil engineer, customer service representative, or general manager
—involved in bringing water and power to communities. Choose
one job and research the skills, education, and personal traits
needed, and the typical salary. Write a ficti onal job announcement
to attract qualified applicants.
