Bido Bido June June 2015 Lito! Lito! 2015 21 ARIEL PINK When Ariel Marcus Rosenberg finally decided to leave Geneva Jacuzzi and come down from behind the screen on the ledge above the stage at his last Liverpool outing in 2012, it sparked the ARIEL PINK show in to life. That it remains one of the oddest entrances to a show in Liverpool in recent memory is testament to the endearingly odd ways of the Californian, whose latest album, pom pom, breezes from genre to genre in a madcap 69 minutes. Ariel Pink is a delightful counterpoint to the po-faced musicians we’re often exposed to, and even the whimsical nature of his music is a pleasurable test of patience. POSITIVE VIBRATION VOL.3 Cast off the weight of post-General Election misery and dance to summer’s vibe with the third instalment of POSITIVE VIBRATION. This year the twelvehour, Jamaican-themed street party – which has become a staple of the North West music calendar over recent years – takes over the garden and club at Constellations. As well as live and uplifting Afro funk from KING PORTER STOMP (pictured) and JEREMIAH FERRARI cascading through the dub sound systems, Positive Vibration will also feature an appearance from Urban Griot LEVI TAFARI. And if the army of selectors can’t keep you going all day and night, the pop-up village of food, drink, crafts and workshops will keep your mind and body entertained. PEGGY SEEGER As a songwriter and performer, PEGGY SEEGER positively relishes breaking taboos: the folk queen, feminist icon, political activist and eco-warrior has never shied away from addressing those subjects which others think are a little close to the knuckle, and her 24th and latest album, Everything Changes, sees no change in approach. Songs about life, death, sex, drug addiction and tragedy sit surprisingly comfortably alongside humour, irony and some lyrics discovered on the back of a public toilet door. Despite the fact (or perhaps because) she is an older woman in a world that doesn’t like its heroines to get old, Seeger continues to innervate and experiment, and continues to deliver.v MORE CRAFT BREWED REVOLUTIONS As we may have mentioned once or twice before, we’re fond of a drop of craft beer at Bido HQ; so the news that the LIVERPOOL CRAFT BEER EXPO is to host its 2015 showcase of hoppy gold at Constellations between 18th and 21st June went down almost as well as a pint of Love Lane. With local and national breweries abundantly represented at the annual event, this year will see the addition of special new bars focusing on German and Italian beers. The kegs will be spread across seventy taps and seven bars, and Bido Lito! will be helping to oil the wheels further by curating a selection of vinyl-only DJ sets from some special guests. liverpoolcraftbeerexpo.com THE SPALDING SUITE As further proof that they’re looking to challenge our conventional idea of theatre, The Everyman play host to another night of innovative and beguiling performance this month. More than a conventional play, THE SPALDING SUITE is a physical theatre show focusing on the sub-culture of British basketball. Six performers will mix live beat-boxing, hip hop music, basketball moves and poetry to explore the nature of the sport and its cultural impact. For those interested in an immersive, theatrical experience this should be an intriguing display; and, similarly, for those who are reluctant visitors to the aisles this could serve as a great starting place. everymanplayhouse.com LIVERPOOL ARABIC ARTS FESTIVAL Celebrating fourteen years of success and achievement, the LAAF will return from 6th to 14th June with a celebration of Arabic culture taking place in various venues across the city. This year the theme of the multi-faceted festival is Shaping Change: A Work In Progress, aiming to examine the ways in which Arabic communities respond to contemporary changes across the globe. As usual there will be an array of visual art, dance, music, theatre and literature on offer, including a family day at Sefton Park Palm House on Sunday 7th June. The undoubted highlight, however, comes on 12th June with a performance from renowned Palestinian singer REEM KELANI (pictured) at St George's Hall. arabartsfestival.com BIDO LITO! AND GETINTOTHIS @ LIMF LIVERPOOL INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL’s massive Summer Jam brings a tidal wave of free live music to Sefton Park in August. Between 28th and 31st August, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, LAURA MVULA and BIPOLAR SUNSHINE will be among those acts to play to huge crowds on the main stage, while the itsLiverpool stage will be giving some fine local artists the chance to revel in a bit of the spotlight too. Once again we have teamed up with GetIntoThis to host the itsLiverpool stage for one of those days (Monday 31st August), and we’re made up to have ESA SHIELDS, BARBEROS, BLUE SAINT, HOLY THURSDAY, SHE DREW THE GUN, THE TEA STREET BAND and SILENT SLEEP joining us for it. limfestival.com FIESTA BOMBARDA How many events can say they’ve brought armies of samba drums and neon carnival decorations to places as grand as the Anglican Cathedral and St George’s Hall over the past three years? We’d wager that it’s probably only FIESTA BOMBARDA who can make that claim, and this month they look set to top themselves with a third birthday two-dayer. Returning to the venue where it all began, the BOMBARDA crew have got SLAMBOREE and HACKNEY COLLIERY BAND (pic
