Scenic Drives
One of the most breathtaking stretches of road in the U. S. is located in the Black Hills: the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. A twisting, turning trip through the spiraling rocks and forests, it has been called“ the template for all scenic byways” and has been rated as one of the top five scenic byways in all of the U. S. The majority of the byway, which consists of the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road, is located within the confines of Custer State Park. You will encounter switchbacks and magnificent tunnels blasted into the rocks that in some cases just frame the faces of Mount Rushmore. There are numerous places along the byway that allow vehicles to pull over so you can climb the rocks, hike, take pictures or just enjoy the sunshine and the scent of pine.
