Pigtail bridges
The “ pigtail ” bridges on Iron Mountain Road are one of a kind . Such care was taken not to disturb the landscape that some sections of the road actually divide into one-lane , one-way ribbons that swoop and bound through mixed pine and deciduous forest .
Water sports
The Black Hills has countless lakes , streams , rivers and reservoirs . Every lake — from Angostura Reservoir State Recreation Area down south to Orman Dam and Pactola further north and Stockade to Legion in the middle — has plenty of room for play .
Most of the lakes have beaches . Or put your boat or jet ski in the water . Paddleboats can be rented in Custer State Park , as can canoes . Or , find your own private little cove and enjoy a day of lying in the sun , picknicking and camping .
