Scenic Drives
One of the most breathtaking stretches of road in the U . S . is located in the Black Hills : the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway .
A twisting , turning trip through the spiraling rocks and forests , it has been called “ the template for all scenic byways ” and has been rated as one of the top five scenic byways in all of the U . S .
The majority of the byway , which consists of the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road , is located within the confines of Custer State Park .
You will encounter switchbacks and magnificent tunnels blasted into the rocks that in some cases just frame the faces of Mount Rushmore .
There are numerous places along the byway that allow vehicles to pull over so you can climb the rocks , hike , take pictures or just enjoy the sunshine and the scent of pine .
