5. Points to Remember 1. Punctuality – arrive on time (or early); if late apologise and explain why. If absent, ensure the employer is informed and the reason given. 2. Use tact and diplomacy when asking questions. 3. Instructions – listen carefully; ask if unsure. 4. Relationships – show respect; show a positive attitude to work. 5. Problems – tell your supervisor. 6. Illness/Absence – you must inform your employer in good time. 7. Health and Safety – you have a duty, both legal and moral, to behave in such a way so as not to put yourself or another person at risk of injury. As such, you also have the right to expect the same of others. To do: one week before you start Think about what questions the employer may ask you. They may ask why you have chosen the work placement or what you want to do when you leave school. It’s good to have some answers prepared. • When you arrive smile and say who you are and who you are there to meet. • Shake hands with the person who you are meeting. Make eye contact. • Be polite: Say please and thank you. Remember that manners cost nothing. • Give full answers to questions: not just yes or no. • Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. • Enjoy it. 4 HORSERACING WORK EXPERIENCE WORKBOOK
