APPENDIX 3: OFFER LETTER TO STUDENT Dear [ ] Welcome! The date for your work experience placement at [ ] is fast approaching. You will meet several of our staff during your placement with us but [ ] will be your main point of contact for the whole time. If there is anything that you want to ask or anything that you are unsure about you should ask me. Preparation Before you arrive with us we would like you to think about what you hope to gain from your work experience. To do Make a list of any key skills that you would like to improve or develop during your work experience. For example working with others, handling horses, communication, problem solving, time management, planning and organizing. Think about any questions that you have about working in [a stud or stable] that you would like to have answered in your time with us. If there is anything special that you would like to learn please let us know. You get out of this what you put in: please ask questions! 14 Arrival Mobile Phones and social media Timekeeping is very important in the world of work and you are responsible for arranging your own travel to/from your work experience. You should arrive on your first day [xx] and report to [xx]. It is very important to be on time or better still be early. [include your own rules on this]. You need to understand and respect this. Attendance You are expected to attend from xx to xx and yy to yy every day with xx allowed for lunch. If you are unable to attend due to illness or another reason please call abc on xxx. Risk assessment and Induction We have completed a risk assessment for young people which is attached and in the course of the induction you will receive more information and instructions about this. Safety is paramount and as far as reasonably practicable risks are eliminated and controlled, but you should understand that there is an inherent risk in working with horses in that they are large sometimes unpredictable animals and require respect. If you are unsure of anything that you encounter in your working day you should raise it with me. This placement is carried out at your own risk. Health and medical conditions If you are using any medication please let us know in advance as we need to be careful of cross contamination around horses. This includes telling us if you are taking hay fever tablets or using a topical gel such as ibuprofen, not just prescription medication. If you have any health conditions or past injuries that may impact on your placement please tell us in advance. Lunch You will be responsible for your own food and drink during your time with us and you will probably want to bring it with you. Please make sure your parent or guardian sees and signs off this letter and attached information for parents below before you start. I look forward to seeing you on [ ]. Yours Dress Code You will be expected to dress appropriately for our work environment. As a guide you should wear comfortable outdoor clothes and shoes or boots that are substantial and comfortable enough to work in all day. Do not wear your cleanest newest shoes or boots as they won’t stay like that for long. Be neat and tidy and keep jewellery to a minimum. HORSERACING WORK EXPERIENCE TOOLKIT FOR EMPLOYERS
