Intermediate Stage( I1 & I2) The Intermediate Stage 1( I1) Rider will be able to ride a straightforward Thoroughbred racehorse in a string in walk, trot and canter on the gallops, with supervision. They will start to demonstrate the development of an independent seat, riding with a suitable contact, remaining in balance with the horse. They will be able to provide basic feedback to the trainer or supervisor in relation to a horse’ s way of going. They will be able to care for a horse after routine and strenuous exercise, noting any obvious abnormalities or unusual behaviour and report accordingly, this could include recognition of obvious lameness.
The Intermediate Stage 2( I2) Rider will be able to ride a range of fit racehorses in walk, trot and canter on the gallops, in a string. They will be able to ride in any position in the string, including leading. They will be able to follow instructions accordingly, which could include instructions regarding pace or supporting other riders within the string.
They will be able to ride in balance with the horse at each of these paces, with an independent seat and effective use of the aids. They will understand the importance of warming up and cooling down, progressive fitness work and the relevance of a variety of exercise regimes. They will be developing feedback techniques on a horse’ s performance to include physical and behavioural traits. They will be able to contribute to maintaining a horse’ s fitness and training.
Advanced Stage( A1) The Advanced Stage( A1) Rider will be able to ride and improve an extensive range of young and mature racehorses at various stages of education and training. They will ride at all paces, including gallop work according to trainers’ instructions, including in a string upsides, with a view to improving horse performance.
They will understand how static and dynamic conformation can affect a horse. They will understand the importance of pace and distance, how going can affect racehorse performance and when and how to adjust training regimes. They will provide clear evaluation to a trainer or supervisor on racehorse performance, offering detailed feedback on the positive aspects as well as areas for improvement. They will have secure industry knowledge including breeding, racecourse configuration, ground, surface, terrain and distance. Aspiring Apprentice and Conditional Jockeys along with Amateur and Point to Point Riders will be expected to ride at this stage prior to attending a Licensing Course and riding under Rules.
