END OF STAGE COMPETENCY GUIDE ACCESS TO HORSES

Entry Stage Competency can be achieved working with any horses, including non-Thoroughbreds.
Developing, Intermediate and Advanced Stage Competency can only be achieved working with Thoroughbreds.
Entry( E1 & E2)
The Entry Stage 1( E1) Rider will have learnt the basic knowledge and skills to handle a quiet horse confidently with supervision. They will work safely with awareness and consideration of others to tack up and mount a horse correctly, with supervision. They will be able to adjust tack with assistance at halt. They will be able to adopt a basic balanced position to control a quiet horse in an enclosed area, in walk and trot. They will be able to dismount safely, untack and provide aftercare to a quiet horse with assistance.
Developing Stage( D1)
The Developing Stage 1( D1) Rider will have gained the knowledge and skills to handle quiet Thoroughbred racehorses, preparing them for ridden exercise with supervision. They will be able to identify and fit a basic range of race exercise tack. They will be able to ride quiet racehorses at walk, trot and canter in enclosed areas. They will be
The Entry Stage 2( E2) Rider will have learnt the basic knowledge and skills to work safely to tack up and mount a horse correctly with assistance. They will be able to adjust girths and stirrups unaided, when mounted at halt. They will be able to ride a quiet horse safely and in control at walk, trot and canter in an enclosed area on the correct trot diagonal and canter lead. They will be able to ride a quiet horse safely, in an open area, at walk and trot including on the roads. They will be able to dismount safely, untack and provide aftercare to a quiet horse, with supervision. able to ride a quiet Thoroughbred at walk and trot on and off road safely in company. They will be able to observe and report any basic changes identified during routine care, handling and aftercare i. e. identify a loose / missing shoe.
