Welfare
• Select and wear the appropriate PPE when handling and riding Thoroughbreds
• Identify, report and assess risks and hazards in the riding environment and workplace
• Report all incidents and accidents to the appropriate person
• Maintain safety riding sensible Thoroughbreds with an awareness and due regard of others
• Carry an exercise whip in either hand, maintaining organised reins and an appropriate level of contact
• Ride with due regard to Road Safety and the Highway Code relating to horses
• Work in line with industry welfare requirements in ways that promote and maintain health, physical and mental health and wellbeing
• Work consistently to maintain the health, safety and security of Thoroughbreds, themselves and others
• Work consistently to meet industry legislation, codes of practice and requirements
• Work in partnership with a range of sensible Thoroughbreds
• Adhere to best practice principles of biosecurity and take the measures needed to keep horses healthy, promote wellbeing
• Work safely and maintain the health, safety and security of horses, self, colleagues and the public
• Recognise equine body language and communication to anticipate and avoid conflict
• Follow yard emergency procedures
• Appropriately respond to and report accidents in the workplace promptly and in accordance with legal and workplace policy
• Support the appropriately trained First Aid at Work qualified colleagues in the workplace, responding to accidents
• Recognise and avoid the risks posed by fire to health and welfare of people and horses in the workplace
• Work to protect racehorses and the industry from disruption
• Take account of the concerns that the public have over welfare of racehorses
• Work positively with horses acknowledging the concerns that the public have over the use of horses in sport to protect racing’ s Social Licence to Operate
• Recognise the signs and common causes that compromise the health and performance of the horse at exercise including lameness
