With recently completing my degree in Equine Behaviour and Welfare at Hartpury University , I ’ m delighted to be presented with the opportunity to participate in the Development Programme . The commitment to progressive thinking and innovation has particularly attracted me as I believe that this is the foundation for a future that fully embraces the need for change and enhancement of welfare . I ’ m excited to gain insight into the different aspects of the industry and how they impact the lived experience of thoroughbreds . Moreover , I ’ m keen to be a part of the change that safeguards the future of racing whilst focusing on the ethical considerations of the horse , such as affective states . Especially within welfare documents and campaigns , where continuous review and refinement is essential for current and robust strategies , that accounts for the ever-changing needs of the public and growth of scientific knowledge . Establishing an overarching ethical framework could enhance public perception and minimise possible misunderstandings of how racehorses are ‘ faring ’ (‘ welfare ’).
