Benefits and Challenges for Parents in an AI Classroom

Hollywood has given us plenty of negative and even frightening images of Artificial Intelligence , or AI , that could give parents concern when they hear that AI is being used in their child ’ s classroom . Of course , those images are fictitious and were created to sell a story . The truth is that there are benefits for their children when Teachers use AI in the classroom . To reap the most out of those benefits , parents need to support their students in learning to use these resources . One of the main ways that apply across all ages is helping their child understand that there are right ways to use AI and there are wrong ways to use AI . So perhaps the movies from Hollywood are a good lesson about what one day soon could be around .

Already in Use

The truth is that many parents are using AI in their own homes with their children before they even reach the classroom door ; they just may not know it . Have you ever used an app on your phone for help with a workout / personal trainer or to help envision a renovation of your home with AI applications like InteriorAI ? AI is taking the world by storm , and you may or may not know you already use it daily . Over the past few years , AI applications for parents have started to come out of the woodwork . Applications like Chatterbaby , which aid parents in understanding why their baby is fussy , or Snoo , which is an AI bassinet that coddles and calms a newborn .
All these AI applications are a great help to our everyday life , but what does it mean we need to be teaching our children in the new day and age of technology ? Vasoya states in his article about AI , “ the rapid adoption of AI in education also comes with significant risks . One of the major concerns is the violation of privacy , with AI systems collecting and processing vast amounts of data about students without their knowledge or consent .”( Vasoya , 2023 )
