Creating a visual artwork in a fine arts class for a grade might check a requirement in school but there is a lack of conversation and reflection by students. There is a lack of writing skills in the subject of visual art. Students have experience and practice writing in other disciplines but have little experience writing art critiques, art reflections and self-assessments. As an visual art teacher in a middle class suburban high school, I am always looking for ways to inspire my students in art and creativity. I want to find a way to help students find their creative voice and visual communication skills while simultaneously increasing writing ability and verbal communication.
