In this case, the “flipped classroom” approach did not improve students’ performance on an 8th grade science curriculum assessment. It did, however, provide me with more time in class to work with students and complete hands-on activities. Additionally, some students did benefit from the approach. When surveyed, most students felt that the videos helped them learn the content somewhat. Clearly, there is room for improvement to make the approach more successful. One idea is to possibly change how the videos are delivered. Another recommendation is to offer embedded quizzes to have students’ check their understanding throughout the learning process with the videos. Also, if the assignment to watch the videos would constitute a greater portion of their grade, it may increase students’ motivation to use the videos.
