In seventh grade, students are reading The Watson’s Go to Birmingham and studying the Civil Rights Movement in coordination with social studies. They will be having a final test on prefixes, roots, and suffixes. If time permits, they will be ending the year studying science fiction by reading short stories by Ray Bradbury. In English 9, students finished a brief study of Shakespeare and Macbeth. They voted on their final reading choices for the end of the year. They are reading short stories by Shirley Jackson and Ray Bradbury. Students have been working on comparing and contrasting elements of the short stories (ask about "The Lottery" & "The Very Strange House Next Door") and writing about them.. Exploring 3D with Mr. Oakes In the 7th grade mathematics course we are currently starting a unit on three dimensional shapes. Students are learning how to represent 3-D shapes in two dimensions and are also learning how to use isometric graph paper to draw them in three dimensions. We will be continuing with this unit and moving on to volume and surface area. If time allows we will also be doing a section on precision. In Algebra we are currently working on a unit on rational expressions and equations. Students have been taking all the skills they have learned throughout the year to tackle some of the most complex equations and expressions that we have seen. They have come a long way and we are on the home stretch. The final exam will be scheduled soon and students will be able to display the knowledge that they have accumulated throughout the year. They have done a tremendous job and should be proud of how far they have come. 5/6 with Mr. Pfadenhauer Students in fifth and sixth grade reading classes are reading The Old Willis Place by Mary Downing Hahn. This is an eerie tale about a young girl who meets two mysterious friends when she and her father move into the caretaker's place at the old Willis estate. Family and Consumer Science / Health Mrs. Mitchell The Family and Consumer Science/Health classes will soon start their final projects of preparing a healthy breakfast, brunch, or lunch. We will use the ChooseMyPlate.gov as a guideline for meal planning which includes a large portion of vegetables, med amount of grains and protein, small amount of fruits and dairy. Each class will as a group decide what the menu will be. Students will work in small groups to make each part of the meal. We will have a planning day, preparation day, and finally a meal day!
