Making Math Fun
with Mrs. Farnsworth
Please make sure that your child has a good supply of pencils
and erasers! We are running out of both of these materials as
the end of the year approaches.
Specifics for 5th grade math:
The remainder of the school year will be focused on
fractions concepts and geometry. Fraction concepts include
representing fractions, comparing fractions, and converting
among mixed numbers and improper fractions, and
computation with fractions and mixed numbers (adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). Geometry concepts
include properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, coordinate
graphing, calculating perimeter of 2D objects, and
calculating area of triangles and quadrilaterals.
It is very important that your 5th grade student masters their
fraction, percent, and decimal equivalents for benchmark
fractions (thirds, fourths, fifths, tenths). Please work with
your student several times a week to improve their mastery.
Specifics for 6th grade math:
The remainder of the school year will be focused on ratios
and geometry. Ratio concepts will begin by connecting their
understanding of multiplicative comparisons to ratios as a
comparison of 2 or more quantities or measurements. Much
time will be spent on developing fluidity in using multiple
forms of ratio language and notation. Next, we will work
with equivalent ratios and real world applications. Then, we

As we begin the third trimester, students in grades 5 and 6

activities, on which the emphasis will be using proper
mechanics and accuracy. We will also use scoops, and do
some introductory activities to lacrosse. After spring break
students can look forward to our second unit on striking
skills. This time we will be focusing on the spring activities
of tennis and wiffleball. We will begin our spring round of
fitness testing in midMay, which will last
