Page 6 Terrier News Making Math Fun with Mrs. Farnsworth Please make sure that your child has a good supply of pencils and erasers! We are running out of both of these materials as the end of the year approaches. Specifics for 5th grade math: The remainder of the school year will be focused on fractions concepts and geometry. Fraction concepts include representing fractions, comparing fractions, and converting among mixed numbers and improper fractions, and computation with fractions and mixed numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing). Geometry concepts include properties of triangles and quadrilaterals, coordinate graphing, calculating perimeter of 2D objects, and calculating area of triangles and quadrilaterals. It is very important that your 5th grade student masters their fraction, percent, and decimal equivalents for benchmark fractions (thirds, fourths, fifths, tenths). Please work with your student several times a week to improve their mastery. Specifics for 6th grade math: The remainder of the school year will be focused on ratios and geometry. Ratio concepts will begin by connecting their understanding of multiplicative comparisons to ratios as a comparison of 2 or more quantities or measurements. Much time will be spent on developing fluidity in using multiple forms of ratio language and notation. Next, we will work with equivalent ratios and real world applications. Then, we Ahhh...Gym in the Spring with Mrs. Smith As we begin the third trimester, students in grades 5 and 6 will be working on a variety of activities. We will begin by finishing up our unit on short and long jump rope skills with short rope skills with a partner, and long jump rope tricks. Our next unit will be a brief review of throwing activities, on which the emphasis will be using proper mechanics and accuracy. We will also use scoops, and do some introductory activities to lacrosse. After spring break students can look forward to our second unit on striking skills. This time we will be focusing on the spring activities of tennis and wiffleball. We will begin our spring round of fitness testing in midMay, which will last for about t
