Wild with color! With Ms. Massucco
In the 5th grade art classes, students have been working with watercolors. Various techniques including wet-on-wet, wax resist
and spatter have been practiced. Now students are painting poppies and using the techniques to create their own unique flowers
with textured backgrounds. These paintings are a breath of Spring! The next project will involve drawing.
In the 6th grade art classes, students have explored the color wheel by mixing with tempera paints. Students are painting some
colorful tulips and showing how to paint with variation in value and hue by using analogous, complementary and
monochromatic colors. Rows of tulips are helping to us to Think Spring!
7th grade art classes started the trimester by looking at landscape artist, David Hockney. Students are now drawing their own
landscapes and including landmarks that may look familiar to you! Some simple rules of perspective will be reviewed for
students so that they can make some buildings look 3-D. Soon students will be mixing paints and trying out various color
themes and textures to make their own landscapes come alive.
8th grade art classes are working on an Op Art design in black and white. After viewing a slideshow on Op Art, including artist
Brigit Riley, students were asked to create an Op Art pattern and use various tools to measure out their design. Students will
need to know how to work with a ruler, find the center of a rectangle and a circle, and use a protractor to measure angles.
Art Plus students will be completing a paper quilt painting. For this project, each student enlarged and painted a square from a
painting by Georgia OʼKeefe. Students had to match color, shape and create texture for this painting. The final image will be
on display after April vacation.
