From the SAP Corner
By Jamie Card, M.Ed
The SAP office continues to support students and families in the
prevention of drugs and alcohol. In collaboration with the Social
Studies, Health, and Physical education teachers, various grade
classes participated in skill building presentations on how to
manage peer pressure and other social interactions. The Tobacco
Coordinator from the Greater Falls Connection played “kick ball”
with students from one of the Advisories while discussing the
dangers of cigarette smoking. Above the Influence (ATI) group
delivered a brief “skit” on the dangers of tobacco smoking at our
March school assembly. Parents received in the mail information
on “how to chat with their kids” about the dangers of alcohol.
Lastly, the SAP office discussed with the Community Supported
Activities also known as the “BFMS PTO” the results of the 2013
Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). April is Alcohol
Awareness Month. We are looking forward to Spring and other
engaging prevention activities that will promote healthy
behaviors, healthy living, and will support the goals of the school.
Grabbing a Good Book
with Mr. Pfadenhauer
Fifth and sixth grade reading classes are reading Holes
by Louis Sachar and Brian's Winter by Gary Paulsen,
respectively. We are currently working on connections
of vocabulary to story elements such as character, plot
and setting. We will be finishing these books soon,
and students will have some end-of-book project
choices.
Edible Books with Mrs. Graves
The 4th Annual Edible Book Contest held in the Library on April 2nd
was a huge success! $275 was raised for the purchase of new books
and materials. A huge thank you to the 39 students and staff members
that brought in edible art based on books. The student’s choice award
for best cake went to Emily Roll’s fondant cake “Willy Wonka and
the Chocolate Factory”. Jasmine Boucher’s “Divergent” cake came in
a close second. The Judge’s Award goes to Jack Bador’s pillow cake
based on the book “Wake”.
