category, while Erangi De Silva from
Visakha Vidyala and Enuri Samaraweera
from Holy Cross College were awarded
the places of the first and second Runners-
up respectively. Previous year’s winner of
the Junior Category, Suneragiri Liyanage
from Royal College retold his success
by securing the titles Best Speaker, Best
Prepared Speaker, and Best Impromptu
Speaker of the Senior category. Sajani
Senanayake from Sirimavo Bandaranaike
Vidyalaya and Sahan Darmasena from
Royal College were awarded the places
of the first and second Runners-up
respectively in the Senior category.
The ‘Unleash Yourself ’ workshop
series was initiated in order to broaden
the reach of the Gavel Club into the
school community and are conducted
annually in various schools in Sri Lanka.
The members of the club enjoy this
opportunity of travelling around the
20 BEST SPEAKER MAGAZINE 2017
country and interacting with school
children while coordinating various
sessions that focus on developing public
speaking and leadership skills.
The first workshop of the Unleash
Yourself Phase VI was held on 28 th
February 2017 at Hillwood College
Kandy. The workshop was centred on
how to deliver Prepared and Impromptu
Speeches with several creative activities
that enabled the students to have fun
while improving their communication
abilities. Royal College Colombo was the
venue of the next workshop, in keeping
with the promise made at Inter School
Best Speaker 2017 to conduct a workshop
on the schools of the winning contestants.
The workshop held on the 19 th of June
2017 was also focused on Prepared and
Impromptu Speeches and the students
also engaged in several interactive and
creative sessions.
The third workshop of the series was
held on the 20 th of June 2017 at S. Thomas’
College Mount Lavinia in which the
Gaveliers conducted a model Educational
Meeting for the newly established Gavel
Club of the College where the students
were a part of a lively educational meeting
based on the theme of movies. The final
workshop of the series for the year was
held on the 8 th of September 2017 at the
Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, the
school of the winner from the Junior
category in the Inter School Best Speaker
Contest 2017. The workshop consisted
of technical sessions on Prepared and
Impromptu speeches while our sponsors
from Achievers Lanka Business School
(Pvt) Ltd. conducted an informative
session on leadership.
The University of Kelaniya Gavel Club
wish to express their heartfelt gratitude
to principals and teachers of the schools
who made the ‘Unleash Yourself ’ Phase
VI possible as well as our sponsors whose
sincere cooperation made this project a
success.
