Whistles blowing, basket balls bouncing, squeaking of tennis shoes on the gym floor, and the crowd cheering: these are all sounds you hear at a youth basketball game. You’ re the referee and it is up to you to make the calls of the game. One problem, you have a migraine.

Migraines affect more than 37 million Americans and can cause sensitivity to light, blurred vision, intolerance to sound, and pulsating pain in the head.
Chronic migraines affected one youth basketball referee, Michael, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the only relief he was getting was at night while he slept. These devastating headaches caused great limitations for Michael, but, he fought through them and continued with his daily life. However, that did not stop him from seeking a suitable solution to relieve him from the pain.
“ I had been to see a neurologist several times,” says Michael, who will be identified by first name only to grant anonymity,“ and he had tried every medicine in the book, but he couldn’ t figure it out.”
Willing to try anything, Michael’ s neurologist finally suggested for him to visit a migraine specialist in Dallas. Dr. Ken Reed, from Reed Migraine Centers, designed and developed his patent-pending neurostimulator implant for treatment of severe and chronic migraines called the Reed Procedure. Dr. Reed has successfully treated patients for over 20 years with an 80 percent success rate and Michael hoped he had found his solution.
The Reed Procedure is a minimally invasive procedure done with an implanted neurostimulator and the unit is completely under the skin.
“ It’ s somewhat akin to a pacemaker for the heart,” says Reed.“ Think of it as, what we call it, a pacemaker for pain.”
