The 1970s were a time of great upheaval in America, not only in political life, but also in the film industry as the New Hollywood gave way to a rise of new aesthetics
and auteurship. Many of the landmark films from the decade emerged as dark reflections of real-life government corruption, reality skewed and skewered by the imagination of the Vietnam generation. From The Conversation to All the President’ s Men, these films from 50 years ago eerily feel as though they are speaking directly to us in our current moment. To paraphrase Howard Beale: You ' re a human being, your life has value. These films remind us that even if we ' re mad as hell, it is possible to make it through turbulent times, and even with a smile on our face thanks to comedies like Being There and Network.
