Census 2016
2016 has been a busy year in the CSO. The Census of Population, which
occurs every five years, took place on Sunday the 24th of April. Over 5,500
Census Enumerators distributed and collected forms from 2,022,895
houses.
The CSO’s Census of Population section in Swords, Co. Dublin has been a
hive of activity. Having distributed and collected the census forms, they are
now processing each form and on the 14th of July 2016, just 11 weeks after
the census took place, they published the preliminary results. The total
population was 4,757,976 persons which saw an increase of 169,724
persons since 2011 or 3.7%.
The CSO’s census division will be busy processing the results for the rest of
2016 and will publish more detailed results during 2017. These results will
be of great benefit to Government, researchers, businesses and the general
public as well as others.
Be Part of CensusAtSchool –
“My Census”
The Census AtSchool describes the society in
which we live and helps us to understand that
society better, whether in the make up of our ages,
origins, activities or any of the other key attributes
for which data is collected in the census.
Learning about the census and about how to
effectively use census and other statistical data is a
key part of our education. It helps us to
understand our society and our role as responsible
citizens in participating in that society.
You may not realise it but, as a student, the census
is relevant to several different subject areas that
you study in primary and secondary school. For
more information, please see http://census.ie/andcommunities/census-in-schools/
