Dublin Bay Biosphere
Video & Dublin City
Comhairle na nÓg
In January 2016, Dublin City Comhairle na
nÓg members were invited by the Dublin Bay
Biosphere Partnership to create a video on
the Dublin Bay Biosphere.
The Biosphere is a protected area that
demonstrates a balanced relationship
between people and nature. It is part of an
international network of biospheres specially
designated by UNESCO (United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation). Dublin Bay was designated as
a UNESCO Biosphere in 2015, reflecting its
significant environmental, economic, cultural
and tourism importance. Over 330,000
people live within the Biosphere area which
extends to over 300 km2. Dublin Bay
Biosphere is the only UNESCO Biosphere in a
capital city in Europe.
When the members of Dublin City’s Comhairle
na nÓg were invited to participate in this
project, they voted with an emphatic,
unanimous yes. Nineteen members (aged
from 12 years of age to 17 years old)
volunteered to get involved. They chose to
make a short innovative video, aimed at
young people, to celebrate Dublin Bay and to
tell the story of the Biosphere in their own
words. And to highlight the importance of
promoting and protecting Dublin Bay and the
surrounding area
Comhairle na nÓg worked closely with
members of Dublin City Council’s Social
Inclusion team and members of the City
Council’s Biodiversity Unit . They attended
talks and guided walks in the area so that
they could experience nature in Dublin Bay.
They wrote the script for the video which was
