BellTIME
Because we are a public service
organisation, we are committed to
being approachable, accessible, and
understood by everyone affected by
our work.
We are now delighted to be able to
welcome visitors to our new Visitor
Centre, h oused in our headquarters at
North Wall Quay in Dublin. The Visitor
Centre currently hosts two interactive
exhibitions: Pounds, Shillings &
Independence and the ECB’s Euro
Exhibition. The former traces the
development of Ireland’s first currency
after independence, with 3D
recreations of the original design
submissions by different artists. The
Euro Exhibition examines in detail the
most tangible symbol of European
integration, our common currency,
and traces everything from its origins
to how counterfeiting is tackled. We
welcome school groups and facilitate
tours, and entry is free of charge.

Just across the hall from our Visitor
Centre, you’ll find the Central Bank’s
archives which will be open by
appointment from autumn of this year.
It is a valuable resource for students,
teachers and the wider public alike
and provides a fascinating insight into
the history and work of the
organisation. Email

Finally, to allow Irish students to “walk
in the shoes” of the ECB’s Governing
Council, we run the Generation €uro
Students’ Awards. A euro area-wide
initiative, the competition calls on
transition and fifth year students to
simulate the role of the ECB’s
Governing Council in determining the
appropriate interest rates for the euro
area. Last year we received a record
number of entries, with 82 teams
participating. The competition
consists of three rounds including an
online quiz, a group assignment and a
presentation by three finalist teams to
a panel of senior economists at the
Central Bank of Ireland. The winning
team and teacher represent Ireland at
the ECB’s awards event in Frankfurt
where they meet ECB President Mario
Draghi. The online quiz will open this
year on 4 October. For further
information, please see
generationeuro.ie.
These are just some of the many ways
to learn about and interact with your
Central Bank. Keep up to date on our
work at centralbank.ie.
