Larry Fay of New York's Gangland, was killed New Year's night 1933 at
the bar the Casa Blanca. Stork Club: The popular club was owned by Sherman
Billingsley. Speakeasies popped up everywhere. One site said
that as soon as the owner could get a padlock for the door, the speakeasy was
good to go. A roar of laughter, a tussle of music and the smell of cigarettes accompanied by the taste of freedom. Prohibition does not exist to us living in The Big Apple. Although they
are places where the law is being broken, they do
a lot of good. First off, the bars of this early twentieth century are mainly
hang outs for men. However, speakeasies are open to both men and women. Jazz
also is booming! the speakeasies provide an outlet for
musicians to play and all have a good time! One statistic that shows the
overwhelming growth of speakeasies is for the city of Detroit. In 1918 before
prohibition, Detroit had 2,334 liquor serving establishments. During the height
of prohibition, 1925, Detroit has 15,000 establishments
that served alcohol.
