Tucked away in the quaint neighborhood of Pallermo Viejo, "NOLA Buenos Aires" serves as a melting pot location for travelers around the world visiting B.A. A dinner at this renovated home consists of Louisiana style fried chicken and mashed potatoes, along with three pints of three different craft brews. These beers are made by brothers Terren and Fransisco, the latter of which is married to Liza, the master chef of the operation. Together, these three have created a unique and magnificent experience for those who come to their "beer nights".
As Joel and I talked with our hosts and enjoyed the food and beer they prepared, we learned a lot about not only their personal journies to Buenos Aires, but the culture surrounding the city.
Fransisco and Liza met in a hostel while traveling through Central America. They hit it off, and decided to travel together for the rest of the trip. A couple years later they were married and living in Buenos Aires together. Once in Buenos Aires, Fransisco reached out to his brother Terren with a business idea: he wanted to start a microbrewery. Terren moved to Buenos Aires from New York with his life savings, bought brew gear, and began Broeders Brewery with Fransisco.
We asked the two brothers to compare brewing/craft brew culture in the United States to what their experience has been like in Buenos Aires, and their answers were extremely enlightening.
Terren explained to us that their success as a business had come from being pioneers in the industry (along with making great beer, of course). Argentina was known for its wine, and even mainstream beers weren't the beverage of choice for most Argentinians. But the tides have been changing as of late. "The craft brewing industry here is a lot like the United States ten years ago." Terren explained. "You don't see craft beers in every single bar, but a passionate following has begun to grow that love great beer, and they are growing by the day."
