PRS for Music & PPL
PRS and PPL manage music rights only. They do not cover film and TV show screenings broadcast on TV, on DVD / Blu-ray or viewed from the internet which require a licence from MPLC.
PRS for Music and PPL both license organisations to play, perform or make available copyright music / sound recordings within a broadcast.
MPLC are providing the same service for Hollywood and independent film studios and TV producers whose creative work is included in a televised broadcast. If any‘ film’ is shown within the broadcast, a licence would be required to protect them from any ongoing copyright infringement.
The fee
“ The fee is £ 47.50 + VAT per year. It is applicable to Small Residential Hotels, Guest Houses and B & Bs with no more than 15 rooms and where facilities are limited to residents and bonafide guests only.
This fee is the lowest on our tariff book and 50 % less than the lowest fee paid by a hotel, pub or restaurant.
“ In setting the tariff we examined all of the existing PRS & PPL tariffs for the public performance of music and sound recordings in pubs, hotels and similar premises. We noticed the disparity between PRS & PPL in the level of fees charged for background music and considered that the PPL tariffs were a good barometer of what would be acceptable to the users of our copyright and our Studio partners without undervaluing the importance of the copyright. For a Guest House or B & B, a fee of £ 47.50 per annum equates to a daily fee of 13p which we consider to be a very reasonable rate when evaluating the importance of our copyright, and is at the lower end of comparable tariffs for similar uses by PRS and PPL.
What areas of a Guest House or B & B require a licence?
The licence is only required for communal areas with examples being bars, receptions and communal lounges. It is not required for televisions in guest bedrooms.
