In Hinduism, there is a concept known as “ahimsa”, which means non-violence. If other ethnicities were to believe in ahimsa, there would be a reduction in the slaughtering of animals because people would perceive it to be wrong and immoral. Mohandas Gandhi, a man who was a believer of ahimsa, preached that it is moralistic behavior for one “not to hurt any living creature by thought, word, or deed”.

Many people become vegetarians due to their religious beliefs.

Gandhi interpreted the views of Hindu Vegetarian in a completely new way, stating “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be measured by the way in which its animals are treated.”

Vegetarianism is not solely Hindus, but Buddhist and Christians as well. Buddhism teaches the view of ahimsa and is evidently positive towards being a vegetarian. Lord Buddha explicitly spoke down towards the killing of animals.
