ESSENTIALS What you pack is up to you and your particular style of travel. However, do try to pack light and remember your surrounds - a hairdryer isn’t going to be of much use in a village that lacks electricity. Also, we advise each of our volunteers to keep waste to a minimum. Avoid leaving rubbish in the village or house as you will notice there area lacks effective waste management systems. For female travellers, please be considerate when disposing of hygiene products as this is a sensitive cultural and environmental issue. The essentials we suggest you pack include: • • • • • • • • • 18 • A supply of any medication you normally need for the duration of your stay in Kenya; A treated mosquito net; Insect repellent; A good torch (a head torch is handy when using the toilet at night); A pair of sturdy walking shoes; Personal toiletries and sanitary items; Toilet paper; Long sleeve shirts/pants to cover up after dark; Mobile phone, charger and adaptor (UK); and Sunscreen and hat. TRAVEL INSURANCE AND VACCINATIONS Please note that ALL volunteers must take out adequate travel insurance prior to travel. You will need to supply us with the details of your insurer and policy prior to being accepted as a volunteer. This requirement is for YOUR safety. Shikunga is a remote community and while there is now a health facility in the area, should you become unwell or have an accident and require urgent medical assistance you may need AMREF to fly you to Nairobi. This is an extremely costly exercise if you don’t have adequate insurance and medical bills in a foreign country can quickly add up. Don’t assume it won’t happen to you. Please also note that we require proof that your vaccinations are up to date for the protection of both the local community and your own health and wellbeing. You can find out more about which vaccinations and medications we suggest and which are required in the Security + Health section of this brochure.
