Despite prices being kept low, the increased frequency of treatments means that annual spend is actually up. The annual amount that women spend on an average basket of treatments is £876 - up by £174 (19%) compared to last year. Male spending has also followed suit, with men now spending 23% more than they were in 2015 on a basket of treatments including hair cuts, hair removal, tanning treatments and massages. This significant boost in revenue for salons and mobile workers is down to men and women indulging in treatments more frequently than ever. For women, the most significant increase in spend is on tanning, with women now having treatments every five weeks, compared to seven weeks in 2015 – this equates to three extra treatments per customer a year. Men are also topping up their tans more regularly, with frequency up 41% compared to 2015 – indulging every five weeks, compared to every nine weeks. As a result of this, our customers have begun to see treatments as less of a treat. Instead, they are something they can afford to work into their monthly spend which means they are indulging more often.’’ 2014 5.8 6.2 4.6 3.1 4.3 3.1 4.4 2014 5.3 8.9 8.9 8.8 7.7 7.2 7.7 8.8 2015 7.3 7.7 7.8 7.2 6.3 5.2 6.7 2015 Charles Worthington MBE Charles Worthington Salon, London 6.0 6.5 5.5 5.0 4.5 3.9 5.6 4.0 6.1 7.3 5.2 5.9 2.9 5.2 6.2 2016 2016 A SNAPSHOT OF THE UK’S HAIR AND BEAUTY INDUSTRY | Beautiful BRITAIN 2016 09
