the term “a priori” to denote a thing
or entity which existed outside
human experience. Freedom was one
such “concept” he developed.
According to Kant, Freedom is
subject to an elemental change called
“transcendental variation” outside of
human experience. It is composed or
subject to both space and time but
precedes human beings and their
“forms” as he called them. In the 20 th
century, freedom was radicalised by
writers such as De Beauvoir, Camus
and Sartre. According to these
writers, freedom was elemental to the
human condition. Freedom as a
concept was then compartmentalised
by the Frankfurt school.
Horkheimer defended a schematic
of reason which presented freedom as
critical thought. He called this
“emancipatory
knowledge”
(Benhabib,2018) . Modern writers on
