Heidegger, the pursuit of Dasein invoked "being-
for-itself" and such a state was seen as the goal of
the philosopher, the one who defies the norm in
order for this norm to exist. There is certainly a
shamanic element at play here. Pierre Bourdieu
contrasts western notions of time with the North
African Kabyle notion of time. The Kabyle
concept of time is “personal and idiosyncratic” as
opposed to being “objective”, it is based around a
concept which is subjective and fit to the purpose
of what is happening, not something which merely
happens as an objective measure. This is the
culture of the shamanic imagination at play and
one can see here how it relates to the imagination
and world of the poet, in this case, Jack Kerouac
(Myrsiades, 2002).
