The Jr High will also be expanding the size of their cafeteria , which will include an additional 150 seats for students .
“ Currently , the Jr High cafeteria is quite crowded ,” BJH principal Roach said . “ The cafeteria is especially crowded when the weather conditions are poor , because students are not able to access the outdoor seating area . With a new cafeteria and new seating , we hope to create a more comfortable and inviting breakfast and lunch area for our students .”
Last year , the bond was advertised with the help of many community members that created the group “ Bears For The Bond .” The group made over 1000 copies of information booklets to take door to door in high traffic areas , and took time to talk to each person . They were also active on social media , where alumni , Audrey Lassanske , coordinated efforts on different platforms . They also had a billboard , advertisements , and signs made to place throughout the district .
“ When it failed the first time I was frustrated and disappointed ,” school board President , Michelle Blackmon said . “ It felt like so much time had been wasted . After not just hearing the feedback but listening to what people were saying , we realized we needed to change how we were reaching out to the public . It took some time to regain the motivation but we came back stronger and better .”
Several members of the group also took the class to be able to register people to vote . Superintendent Dr . Hampton also presented at town hall events to spotlight projects individually through the BISD Facebook page .
“ The Bears for the Bond committee was much more active the second time and we did more of bringing the information to the people as opposed to relying on people coming to us to get informed . Passing the bond was more than just a feeling of relief , it was a sense of pride in our community for recognizing the need and supporting our district and our kids in ways that make them feel valued . I ’ m excited about having facilities we can take pride in , and invest in programs that prepare our kids for a future beyond High school . I ’ m excited to see the opportunities and uses the Auditorium and other facilities will provide for our district and community in the years ahead .”
