Junior School From A to B Mr Thomas Waldron, IPC Coordinator and Year One Teacher The Year One students went to visit the Transport Museum located at Taman Mini, Jakarta. This was in line with their current learning in the IPC unit ‘From A to B’. They got to see many exciting types of transport used in Indonesia and all over the world and not only some that are used today but some that were used by people in the past. The students were excited to learn that Jakarta had its very own red double decker bus from London driving around its streets not so long ago and they were able to see it in the museum. There were boats, planes, cars and lots of other types of transport that was used a long time ago, some time ago and very recently on show. There was even an opportunity to board a real Garuda Indonesia aeroplane and have a go at sitting in the pilot’s cockpit! Cars, Bikes and Motorbikes… It’s all about Transportation! Suhana Jacky Khiani, Year 5 The Year one students are in the process of learning all about transportation and how they get from place A to place B. Their host country is Canada. The big idea is, “Everyday people all around the world make different types of journeys, on land, on water and in the air.” To make these journeys, people have invented lots of different ways of getting from A to B. They are learning about so many types of transportation in different subjects. In Geography, they are learning about how people travel around Jakarta, how to make maps to record their journey to school, the types of transport in Indonesia and Canada and lastly, how to create their own activity holiday. These are all fun activities they had and are still having a lot of fun working on tasks. Secondly, about society and how to take care of themselves, they will be finding out how to cross the road safely, about bicycle and road safety and lastly, about people with restricted mobility. Their vocabulary words are train, submarine, car, bus, helicopter, bicycle, ship, hot air balloon, aeroplane, space shuttle and boat. They need to know the meanings of these words to understand the topic better. In Science and experiments, they explored how to make their own sailboats and aeroplanes. They also learned about the force involved in sports, how to make a fair test and how power sources make things move. They are learning things, which are challenging, but they are grasping it really quickly. 6
