Earth Day Aaryan Amar, Year 6 In the month of April, the week before all the students went on their Term break, Beacon Academy celebrated Earth Day. Earth is the only planet that supports living things and Beacon Academy celebrated Earth Day so that students would become aware of what is happening to the planet they live in and how they can protect it. Year One to Year Three students began their celebration by using recycled materials to make an astonishing upcycled candleholder. At the same time, the Year 4s and 5s made frames that were nature-themed, displaying a lot of creativity. Up in the VART room, Middle School students created a colourful mural that used circles to represent the shape of the Earth. Photo Gallery The choir led by Mr Mark Lai preformed ‘Riversong’. All the vocal talents of the choir students appealed to all the students and teachers’ ears. Each and every one of his or her unique sounds together delivered a fantastic performance. After that, Zubin Amar who won The Voice competition in December preformed ‘Colours of The Wind’ from Disney’s Pocahontas. He gave the audiences high notes and ‘wow’ moments. “I was really happy to do this to help send a message to everyone to save the Earth and I think the lyrics of this amazing song really does that,” says Zubin after performing. The week before, at the House meetings, the Houses discussed their plans for a DRY Garden Design Competition that was to be held the following week. Throughout the week students brought plants, pebbles and the House of Water even brought fish. Finally, when Friday came after the great performances, Air and Fire gathered all their things to decorate their gardens while Water and Earth got to listen to a wonderful story that was also melodiously read by Ms Katie. The story was ‘The Lorax’ by Dr. Seuss. Video All the students, entertained and learning something at the same time, listened eagerly to the story. Meanwhile, Fire and Air were working hard, getting their vision onto the ground using plants and pebbles. Back in the Commons, Ms Katie had the Lorax’s moustache for the excited students and they took pictures with them until the Fires and Airs came back and the tables were turned. Once the gardening decorating competition and The Lorax reading aloud were over, every House was satisfied with their garden and was filled with appreciation for the Earth. Then, Ms Anna presented every House with a quote about the Earth that inspired all the students, which was followed with Ms Maggie announcing that Fire had won the garden decorating competition. The House of Fire chanted their cheer and the House Captains distributed their prize - pencils to the happy students, which concluded the 2014 Earth Day event. That day everyone left Beacon Academy with a newfound passion to help the Earth. 2
