The story is about Charlie’s choice between keeping his promise to his younger brother, Sam, who died in a car accident, or saving the woman he loves. Blaming himself responsible for his brother’s death, he promised Sam that they will meet every day, before the sun sets and when the canyon’s fire, to the forest where they always practice baseball, but this promise was once and ended broken as Charlie chose to save Tess, a high school colleague, whom he learned to love not knowing it was her spirit he was dealing with. Now, where did the storm takes place in the story? Tess is a yachtswoman who wants to make a world trip with her yacht, but a week before her departure, a storm will come in her way. She was advised by her shipman not to go to, but she refuses. The storm stuck her in an island destroying her yacht and leaving her body unconscious. In the end, Tess was saved by Charlie with the help of Sam guiding him where Tess’s body is. Sam now, sees the light that made him cross his soul to heaven.
The story in the novel is different in some parts: The way Charlie and Sam had an accident, the way Tess was stuck in the island, and the way the story ends. In the movie, it is not stated that Charlie and Tess had sons, the last part was that they got married and they sailed again to the sea as Charlie bids goodbye to Sam.
I’ve watched the movie before and I find it interesting, inspiring and heart-warming. The theme is unusual. “Live. Love. Let Go.” You? If you were to choose between your family and the one you love, who will you choose?
CHARLIE ST. CLOUD – “LIVE. LOVE. LET GO.”
This week’s theme is about the storm that caused almost a week of class suspension in Metro Manila. To relate it in my article, I chose a book that has a storm that played a big role in the story – Charlie St. Cloud by Ben Sherwood. Originally, the title is “The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud”, a book in 2004 that became a movie in 2010, shortened its title to “Charlie St. Cloud” starring Zac Efron and Amanda Crew.
