As for our blog theme for this week – Foundation celebration of PUP, here’s a movie that was adapted from the series of novels entitled: FOUNDATION!
“For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Sheldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future—to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire—both scientists and scholars—and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the Galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for a fututre generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.
But soon the fledgling Foundation finds itself at the mercy of corrupt warlords rising in the wake of the receding Empire. Mankind’s last best hope is faced with an agonizing choice: submit to the barbarians and be overrun—or fight them and be destroyed.”
Foundation was series of science-fiction novels by Isaac Asimov. it has seven volumes in which in its in-universe chronological order are Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation,Foundation’s Edge, and Foundation and Earth. Columbia Pictures (Sony) successfully bid for the screen rights for it’s movie adaptation on January 15, 2009, and then contracted Roland Emmerich for direction. While Emmerich and Michael Wimer were the producers.
But in the making of the film rumors and critics have always something to say:
There is a certain irony, which Hollywood is probably too dumb to get, in the fact that the director of some of the stupidest science fiction movies ever made (Independence Day!Godzilla!) would adapt one of the smartest science fiction novels ever written! http://www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/previews/foundation-movie.html
The challenge in adapting these books to film will be in translating the many philosophical and psychological elements to the big screen. The idea of psychohistory — a branch of science which is purported to foretell large sweeps of human history) — is critical to the series. So being able to convey this abstract concept in a compelling way on screen will likely determine the success of the film. http://dauntlessmedia.net/foundation/movie-announcement.html
To me, this was a blessing in disguise. I love the Foundation Trilogy, and I would love to see the story brought to the big screen. However, it is being brought to us by Emmerich. I have a few things to say about this, but I will get to the point and complain at the end. - GeekTyrant
