Industrial and powder coatings
Industrial and Powder Coatings Council
Chaired by Patrick Smith, Manor Coatings
The IPCC met twice in 2017, and in addition the powder coatings
members also met in a joint meeting with the CEPE Powder Coatings
group in April. BCF’s PaintSafe concept was discussed, and it was
felt a useful umbrella brand to support the work of the BCF to
promote the safe use of industrial coatings, particularly when sold via
distributors. Several new guides were approved by the IPCC, including
a draft guide to professional removal of lead paints and a guide to
the sale of industrial coatings, especially with regard to internet sales.
BCF were successful in reversing changes in the guidance on waste
packaging, which will be a significant cost saving to members. The
Council also discussed the TiO 2 situation, and debated the future of
chemical regulations post Brexit. HSE’s enforcement team gave an
informative presentation on how regulations such as REACH are
enforced and policed. The potential new BCF Apprenticeships Plus
service was also presented, which will be launched in late spring 2018.
High Performance Coatings Group
Chaired by Malcolm Morris, Sherwin- Williams Protective & Marine
Coatings
The High Performance Coatings Group (HPC) met on two occasions
as a BCF member-only group in 2017 and participated in additional
meetings with key contact organisations such as Highways England
and Network Rail. The new Protective Coatings for UK Infrastructure
Group has become a key focus for BCF members involved with
protective coatings, providing a forum for discussing current issues,
paint inspection, training, surface preparation and other key topics.
The last two meetings have involved 25+ participants and covered
topics such as drone use for paint inspection, alternatives to site
blast cleaning and possible ways to streamline paint qualification
procedures.
The successful conclusion of the revision of ISO 12944, with the
introduction of cyclic testing and the new very high classifications and
the use of CX for offshore scenarios, was welcomed by the group,
after several consultations and discussions on what would be the best
outcome from the ISO Working Group discussions. A comprehensive
BCF document providing guidance on how to treat lead-painted
metal surfaces for the industrial / protective coatings sector was
published in November and was well-received by painting contractors
and organisations active in the industry.
The HPC also published documents on the re-use of structural steel,
the new classification systems under ISO 12944 and EN 16623, and
a summary of the various technologies used in protective coating
applications during 2017. The concerns over the loss of business to
weathering steel remain – a dossier was started in readiness for any
articles or media activity on this in future. Finally, the group recognised
