COATINGS TRAINING INSTITUTE CTI expands reach globally and at home BCF’s distance learning programme, the Coatings Training Institute (CTI) entered into new markets in 2019 with a new offer complementing the apprenticeship system, and also globally, with a license agreement completed in China. At home, the BCF introduced their new Apprenticeships Service (page 53) with a distinct feature in offering coatings specific coursework from the CTI. To satisfy the requirements of an apprenticeship, there is a 20% coursework component and, with the BCF apprenticeships service, members can access CTI modules fully funded to fulfil the requirement. In 2017, BCF started a project to redesign and improve the CTI modules, making them more user friendly and allowing them easy conversion into presentation format, for companies interested in offering face to face training. That redesign has now been completed for all levels. Member feedback into the new modules has been excellent, with students finding them more interactive and easier to read. CTI has received approved status for levels 2,3 and 4 certificates (with level 5 in progress). This approved status, awarded by the RSC, recognises the quality of the content and delivery of the training provided in these certificates. Those who achieve a CTI certificate can use it as evidence for attaining key attributes of Chartered Chemist status. demonstrates competency to prospective customers and regulators. With thanks to the CTI tutors, Malcolm Griffiths, Martin Addicott and Andy Storey for providing guidance and advice to the students throughout the year. Malcolm Griffiths Martin Addicott Andy Storey Finally, in March 2019 and after two years of discussion, BCF signed an agreement with the China National Coatings Industry Association (CNCIA), who will launch CTI in China. As a growing market for the coatings and printing inks industries, there is a high demand for specialist training in China. The agreement was signed by BCF’s CEO Tom Bowtell at the China Coatings Summit in Puyang, along with Madame Sun, President of CNCIA. CNCIA will now begin the work to build the CTI proposition for China, including translating all training materials, creating a dedicated online study portal, and hiring local tutors to support the student’s study. The long term future for CTI includes further global agreements around the world, and expansion of the offer into more companies in the UK.
